When you donate a vehicle through CarLift Utah, your car is picked up right at your door in Salt Lake City and the surrounding Salt Lake Metro—at no cost to you. A local tow partner comes to your home, workplace, or storage lot, and the proceeds from your donation support Heritage for the Blind’s mission serving people who are blind or visually impaired. Donating locally means you make life easier for a neighbor who is blind, while we make the process easy for you.
We arrange pickups across Salt Lake City neighborhoods like Sugar House, The Avenues, Rose Park, Glendale, East Bench, Capitol Hill, and downtown, as well as suburbs such as West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, South Jordan, West Jordan, Draper, Taylorsville, and Midvale. We also reach outlying communities in the broader Salt Lake Metro, from Herriman and Riverton to Bountiful and beyond. Whether your car is in an apartment garage, driveway, alley, or rural property, we coordinate with a local tow operator to safely remove it and handle the paperwork basics, so you can support your own community without any hassle.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and location
Provide your contact info, Salt Lake City or Salt Lake Metro address, and a few details about your vehicle—running or not, where it’s parked, and any access notes. This helps us match you with the right local tow provider, whether you’re in Sugar House, West Valley City, or farther out toward Herriman or Bountiful, and plan the safest way to reach your car.
2. Choose a convenient pickup day and time window
We’ll offer available pickup windows based on your area and tow-truck availability. Dense neighborhoods near downtown or The Avenues may have different timing than outlying areas like Draper or Riverton. Together we’ll pick a day and a general time frame that works for you, including weekday or weekend options where possible, so you’re not left guessing when the truck will arrive.
3. Prepare keys, title, and clear access
Before pickup, locate your Utah vehicle title if available, remove personal items, and make sure our tow operator can get to the car. That might mean reserving a spot in a Capitol Hill street-parking zone, arranging a gate code in a South Jordan HOA community, or clearing space around a vehicle parked on a tight Sugar House driveway. We’ll explain what’s needed for your specific situation.
4. Meet the tow driver or arrange a no-contact handoff
In many Salt Lake Metro neighborhoods, it’s easiest if you’re home to sign the title (when needed) and hand over the keys. If that’s difficult, we can often coordinate a no-contact pickup—such as leaving keys in a secure spot—so long as paperwork is completed ahead of time. The driver will load your vehicle, give you a basic receipt, and tow it away at no cost to you.
5. Receive your tax receipt and support your community
After your car is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends you a tax receipt. Most donors can claim at least a $500 deduction; donations over $500 typically use IRS Form 1098-C. Your local car donation helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired, supporting individuals and families right here in Utah, while you gain the satisfaction of clearing space and helping your own community.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight streets and downtown or Avenues access
Tip: Some downtown, Capitol Hill, or Avenues streets and alleys can be tough for a flatbed. Let us know if your car is on a steep hill, narrow lane, or in a tight apartment lot. We may choose a smaller truck, adjust the pickup window, or ask you to move the car to a more accessible curb or lot corner if it still runs.
Gate codes, garages, and HOA or apartment rules
Tip: In gated communities or complexes around South Jordan, West Jordan, Murray, or Sandy, tow trucks may be turned away without proper access. Share any gate codes, parking permits, or garage instructions ahead of time. If your HOA or building requires tow notice or special forms, try to handle that the day before so your pickup isn’t delayed at the last minute.
Very rural or outlying Utah addresses
Tip: If you’re on the far edge of the Salt Lake Metro or in a more rural area toward Tooele, Eagle Mountain, or beyond, pickups can take a bit longer to schedule. Tow operators often group rural trips to keep routing efficient. Being flexible on days and time windows helps us secure a driver faster and avoid having to reschedule due to distance or weather conditions.
Missing title or plate and key questions
Tip: You can usually donate without current registration, but Utah title rules still matter. If you can’t find the title, tell us early so we can explain your options. Remove Utah plates if you plan to return them or cancel insurance; leaving plates on by mistake can create confusion. Also, let us know if you don’t have keys or if the steering is locked, so the tow operator brings the right equipment.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky for your exact situation—maybe your car is in a tight downtown structure, an underground garage in Sugar House, or stored on a steep Avenues driveway—talk with us about alternatives. In some cases, we can meet you in a nearby open lot, wide side street, or workplace parking area where a flatbed can safely maneuver. If you’re already planning to tow the car elsewhere, you can sometimes bring it to a mutually agreed location and still donate through CarLift Utah, so your gift continues to support Heritage for the Blind and your Utah community.
Salt Lake City pickup coverage
CarLift Utah serves the full Salt Lake City and Salt Lake Metro area, including neighborhoods like Sugar House, The Avenues, Liberty Wells, Rose Park, Glendale, and East Bench, plus surrounding cities such as West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, Draper, South Jordan, Riverton, Taylorsville, Midvale, and Bountiful. Pickups in central Salt Lake often schedule faster than more distant spots, but we also work with partners who reach outlying Utah communities. For Utah titles, you’ll usually sign the title over to the charity or its authorized agent; many donors remove their Utah plates before pickup and coordinate with the DMV or their insurer about cancellation. We’ll walk you through what’s typical, while reminding you we’re not a legal or tax advisor.
