Running or not, wrecked, or missing registration, we can usually take it as long as you have a signed Utah title. In most parts of the Salt Lake Metro, a driver can get to you within a few business days, depending on routing and weather. How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us where your car is in Salt Lake Metro
Start by calling CarLift Utah or filling out our short online form with your contact info, vehicle details, and exact location — whether it’s in downtown Salt Lake, Sugar House, West Jordan, Sandy, or out toward Magna or Draper. We’ll confirm that your car is within our free pickup zone and answer any questions about titles, condition, or access right away.
2. Choose a pickup day and time window
We’ll offer you the earliest available pickup windows for your area. In central neighborhoods like Capitol Hill, Avenues, or Millcreek, availability is often faster; very rural addresses may take a bit longer. You pick a day and a general time window that works for you. We coordinate with our local towing partner to lock in that slot and email or text your confirmation.
3. Prepare the title, keys, and vehicle location
Before pickup, remove personal items from the car and locate your Utah title. We’ll explain exactly how to sign it over. Decide where to leave the title and keys if you won’t be home — glove box, under a mat, or with an office manager. Make sure the vehicle is reasonably accessible to a tow truck in your driveway, carport, complex lot, or street space.
4. Our local driver tows your car for free
On your pickup day, a local flatbed or hook-and-chain operator comes to your address — home, workplace, repair shop, or storage lot. There’s no payment, no swipe, no surprise fees. The driver collects the keys and title where you left them, loads the vehicle, and tows it away. You don’t need to help push, jump, or prep a non-running car; we handle the logistics.
5. Receive your tax receipt from the charity
Once the car is sold, Heritage for the Blind — the 501(c)(3) your vehicle supports — mails you a donation receipt. Most donors can claim at least up to $500; for values over $500, the charity will send the IRS Form 1098-C details you’ll need. Keep this paperwork for your tax records and always consult a tax professional if you have deduction questions.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight driveways and steep hillsides in east-bench areas
Tip: Neighborhoods like the Avenues, Federal Heights, and east Millcreek can have narrow, steep driveways that challenge a flatbed. If access is tight, park the car on the street or a flatter shared lot when possible, and tell us exactly where it will be. Clear obstacles and let us know about low branches, sharp turns, or alley access so the driver can plan ahead.
Gated communities, apartment garages, and HOA rules
Tip: In areas like Daybreak, downtown high-rise garages, and complex lots in Murray or West Valley City, the tow truck may need gate codes, buzz-in instructions, or parking permits. Share any codes, on-site security rules, or entry instructions when you schedule. If your HOA or property manager needs notice, give them a heads-up so the driver can enter and park without delays.
Very rural or canyon locations outside the core metro
Tip: Addresses out toward Tooele, Eagle Mountain, or further up canyons like Big Cottonwood may require extra routing time or special equipment, especially in winter. Be honest about road conditions and whether the vehicle is on dirt, gravel, or a shoulder. We’ll still arrange free pickup, but timing can stretch beyond a few business days depending on truck availability and weather.
Street parking and Salt Lake City permit/parking limits
Tip: If your car is parked on a busy street near downtown, the U of U, or Sugar House, check local parking restrictions and street-sweeping days. Tow trucks need a legal, accessible spot to hook up. Let us know about time-limited parking or loading zones so we can aim for a window when the driver can safely park and load without risking a ticket or hurried hookup.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky — for example, your car is trapped in a non-working garage door, has no wheels, or sits in a parking structure a flatbed can’t enter — we can usually work around it. Sometimes donors in dense parts of downtown Salt Lake, the U of U area, or older garages in Sugar House choose to meet the tow truck at a nearby surface lot or curb space where loading is easier. If you already have the car at a mechanic or storage yard in places like Murray, Midvale, or West Jordan, we can often tow directly from there instead of your home address at no cost.

Free pickup also extends into parts of Davis and Utah counties and more rural Utah areas; the main difference is timing, which can take longer outside the core metro. For Utah titles, you’ll typically sign as seller and remove your license plates before the tow. The Utah DMV generally advises returning or destroying plates if not transferring them, and you should cancel insurance once the vehicle is picked up.
