If your car has dents, rust, a cracked windshield, hail or accident damage anywhere in the Salt Lake Metro, you can still donate it. CarLift Utah works with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3), to accept vehicles in any cosmetic condition—running or not. Whether it’s been sideswiped on State Street, rusting in a Sugar House driveway, or hit by a storm in West Valley City, body damage does not disqualify your car from donation.
Here’s how it really works in Utah: you don’t fix anything. We schedule free towing from your home, work, or shop in places like Murray, Sandy, Millcreek, or Rose Park. After pickup, the vehicle is sold—sometimes to a local buyer, sometimes at auction or for parts—based on its true condition, not its original book value. Your tax deduction is based on the actual sale price, so heavy damage may mean a lower deduction, but you still receive a minimum guaranteed receipt of $500. If it sells for more, you can deduct that higher amount according to IRS rules. You get a full tax receipt by mail, and your unwanted car helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged car, honestly and simply
Start online or by phone with CarLift Utah. Just share the basics: make, model, year, mileage, and what kind of damage you have—dents, rust, cracked glass, accident or storm damage. It’s fine if it doesn’t run. We don’t need a mechanic’s report; a straightforward description helps us plan the best way to pick it up around the Salt Lake Metro.
2. Schedule free towing anywhere in the Salt Lake Metro
We arrange a licensed tow truck to pick up your vehicle at no cost from your home, workplace, or body shop in areas like Downtown, Sugar House, West Jordan, Sandy, or Bountiful. Whether it’s parked on the street or in a driveway, running or not, we coordinate a pickup window that works for you and confirm what paperwork to have ready.
3. Hand over the keys, title, and damaged car as‑is
On pickup day, the driver will quickly verify the VIN and paperwork, then load your damaged vehicle—no cleaning or repairs required. You can remove plates if required by Utah or ask the driver what’s customary. Once it’s on the truck, your responsibility for the car essentially ends, and CarLift Utah manages the rest of the process with Heritage for the Blind.
4. Vehicle is sold based on real condition, not looks
After tow, the car is evaluated and sold. Depending on its condition, it might go to a local buyer, auction, or a licensed dismantler if the damage is severe. Body damage, dents, rust, and broken glass simply affect the sale price—not your eligibility. The proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind to support programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
5. Receive your tax receipt and claim your deduction
Once the vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind issues a tax receipt. You’re guaranteed documentation for at least a $500 deductible amount; if it sells for more, your receipt reflects the higher sale price. For deductions over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C when you file. Keep this paperwork with your tax records and talk with your tax professional if you have questions.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect title for a damaged car
Tip: Even if your vehicle is banged up, Utah still requires proper title transfer. If the title is lost, in another name, or has errors, it can delay pickup. Before scheduling, check your Utah title matches your ID and isn’t signed over to someone else. If there’s a title issue, tell us upfront so we can explain your options in the Salt Lake Metro.
Car stored at a shop, impound, or apartment lot
Tip: If your damaged car is sitting at a body shop, tow yard, or tight apartment parking lot in places like Midvale or South Salt Lake, we may need extra details. Let us know about gate codes, storage fees, or special hours. Having a contact person on-site and clearing any holds in advance keeps the free tow smooth and avoids unexpected storage costs.
Personal items and loose parts left in the vehicle
Tip: Accident or storm damage often means loose glass, trim, or parts inside the car. Before tow, remove personal items, plates if you prefer, and anything you want to keep. It’s okay if damaged parts are piled inside; just secure anything sharp or hazardous if you can. Clear communication with the driver helps avoid delays and safety issues at pickup.
Unclear expectations about the tax deduction amount
Tip: A heavily dented or rusted vehicle may sell for less than a clean one. Your deduction is based on the actual sale price, not old book value. You’re still guaranteed a receipt for at least $500, but it could be higher if the car brings in more. If you’re unsure how that affects your taxes, plan to check with a tax advisor before filing.
