Donate Your Car by Dec 31 in Salt Lake City for 2026 Taxes

In Salt Lake City, your IRS donation date is the pickup date. If your car is towed by Dec 31, it counts this tax year. CarLift Utah schedules fast, free pickup across the Salt Lake Metro.

For the IRS, the donation date is the day your vehicle is actually picked up, not the day you call or fill out the form. To claim your car donation on this year’s taxes, CarLift Utah must have your vehicle physically picked up by December 31. Because trucks book up fast in the last weeks of the year, we strongly recommend you schedule your pickup 3–5 business days before December 31 so we can guarantee a slot. Heritage for the Blind, the 501(c)(3) we partner with (EIN 58-2164446), runs Monday–Saturday through the holiday season to help you meet the deadline.

CarLift Utah is local to the Salt Lake Metro and understands year-end crunch in and around Salt Lake City. Whether your car is in Sugar House, Rose Park, The Avenues, Glendale, Millcreek, West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, Draper, or Bountiful, we work to get your vehicle towed before the New Year’s Eve cutoff. The online form takes about two minutes, there’s never any pickup charge, and non-running vehicles are welcome. After the vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C when required), but your deduction year is locked in based on the pickup date. Donate now and turn your extra car into a same-year tax deduction while helping people who are blind or visually impaired.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup controls your deduction year

The IRS uses the date your vehicle is picked up as the donation date—not when you schedule it. If your car is towed on or before December 31, you may claim the deduction on that tax year’s return.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

When Heritage for the Blind sells a donated vehicle that produces a deduction of more than $500, they issue IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the gross sale price and must be included with your tax return.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, your allowable deduction is the amount the charity receives when your vehicle is sold, not a price guide value. The final sale price is what appears on your acknowledgment and, when required, on Form 1098-C.

Itemizing on Schedule A is required

To use a car donation as a federal tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. A tax professional can help you decide which option is better for you.

Acknowledgment typically mailed within 30 days of sale

After your car is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends a written acknowledgment—usually within about 30 days of the sale date. The tax year you claim is based on the pickup date, even though the letter arrives later.

FAQ

If my pickup is scheduled in December but happens in January, which year is my deduction?
The IRS bases your donation date on the actual pickup, not when you called or filled out the form. If the tow truck picks up your car in January, it counts for next year’s taxes—even if you scheduled in December. To claim this year’s deduction, make sure your pickup happens on or before December 31.
How close to December 31 can I schedule my car donation in Salt Lake City?
We recommend scheduling your pickup 3–5 business days before December 31, especially in the Salt Lake Metro where end-of-year slots fill quickly. Heritage for the Blind dispatches Monday–Saturday, but last-minute requests may be harder to accommodate. The earlier you contact CarLift Utah in December, the easier it is to guarantee a pre–Dec 31 pickup.
Do I need my Form 1098-C in hand by December 31 to claim this year’s deduction?
No. For tax purposes, the key is that your vehicle is picked up on or before December 31. Heritage for the Blind will mail your written acknowledgment (and Form 1098-C when required) after the vehicle sells, which may be weeks later. You still claim the deduction for the year in which the pickup occurred.
Can I donate a car that doesn’t run or has failed emissions?
Yes. CarLift Utah accepts most vehicles in any condition—non-running, failed emissions, or not currently registered. There’s no need for repairs or a passing inspection. As long as the tow truck can access the vehicle in the Salt Lake Metro, we can usually arrange a free pickup and help you turn it into a tax-deductible donation.
What paperwork do I need in Utah to donate my car?
Ideally, you’ll have your Utah title in your name, free of liens, ready to sign over at pickup. If your title is lost, let us know when you contact us so we can explain your options. You don’t need emissions or safety documents for the donation itself—just the title and your ID at pickup.
How much can I deduct for my car donation?
In most cases, your deduction is based on the amount Heritage for the Blind receives when your vehicle sells. If the deduction is more than $500, you’ll receive Form 1098-C showing the gross sale price. Because tax situations differ, it’s wise to consult your tax advisor on how this deduction fits into your overall return.
Does CarLift Utah charge any towing or processing fees?
No. Pickup is free for donors in Salt Lake City and across the Salt Lake Metro. There are no towing, listing, or processing charges taken from you at any point. Your vehicle is picked up at no cost, sold to benefit Heritage for the Blind, and you receive the appropriate tax acknowledgment for your records.
